Actress Nicole Kidman most admired women

Actress Nicole Kidman has been named as one of the most admired women in Australia according to a survey by an insurance company.WHAT do a pair of Olympians, a model, an opera singer, a surfer, a princess and a former Masterchef contestant have in common?

They've all beaten Prime Minister Julia Gillard in the popularity stakes. The prime minister came 58th on a list of Australia's 100 most admired women, according to a survey commissioned by an insurance company.Olympic gold medallist Cathy Freeman topped the survey of 1221 women of varying ages, while four-time Olympic champion Dawn Fraser was the second most admired.

The top 10 was completed by four actresses, three singers and a model.

Actresses Cate Blanchett and Nicole Kidman ranked third and fifth, separated by 1970s songstress Olivia Newton-John, and model Miranda Kerr was eighth.

Princess Mary of Denmark was ranked 21st and even former Masterchef contestant Poh Leung and Today Show host Lisa Wilkinson were ranked as more admired than Australia's first female prime minister.

Mi Fon Lew, from the WIRE Women's Information support service based in Melbourne, said it was disappointing that successful businesswomen, doctors and politicians were ranked so low.

"I think it's just reflective of the media, the way it is today, and how emphasis and focus is given on celebrities and the cult of celebrity whereas the work of women and what they achieve and what they do in their professional lives is given much less air time," she said.

"It's got to do with the way society perceives women."It's reinforcing that marketing message that women should look good, or be popular.''

Journalist Ita Buttrose came in at 35, ahead of Queensland Premier Anna Bligh at 36 and Governor-General Quentin Bryce at 49, while Fiona Wood, one of only two doctors on the list, came in at 54.

Deputy opposition leader Julie Bishop, at 83, was trumped by controversial former politician Pauline Hanson and feminist Germaine Greer, but even she fared better than Westpac boss Gail Kelly, at 92.

The survey, in which respondents rated their admiration of a list of 123 women, was conducted by McCrindle Research for insurance brand Million Dollar Woman.
