Washington assists Tuvalu to cope with water crisis

Suva -- The U.S. Embassy in Fiji said here Tuesday that Washington is assisting Tuvalu in responding to the state of emergency it declared due to a severe shortage of fresh water in the Pacific island nation.

An official at the U.S. embassy said Washington is donating 50, 000 U.S. dollars to the International Committee of the Red Cross to supply adequate safe drinking water to affected areas in Tuvalu' s capital Funafuti and a number of outer islands.

The United States commitment came following the Tuvalu High Commission's briefing of the diplomatic corps on the water crisis and a request for support.

Tuvalu is one of the world's smallest island nations with a population of 11,000 people. At present, more than 6,000 people in three islands including Funafuti are faced with a severe water crisis.

The United States has previously supported Tuvalu through a U.S. Department of State program looking at adaptation and mitigation policies designed to address issues related to climate change.
